Michael has a BA in Botany from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Masters in Marine Biology from San Francisco State. Since 1988, he has been a regular contributor for KQED-FM Perspective Series. Michael also writes the “Ask the Naturalist” column for Bay Nature Magazine.

Williams Selyem Winery is considered to be one of California’s most respected makers of Pinot Noir, setting new standards for the class of wine in the United States and elevating the status of the Russian River Valley winegrowing region among the best in the world. After winning the Sweepstakes Prize (top red wine) at the California State Fair in 1987, their Pinot Noir grew in notoriety throughout the 1990s, creating a two-year wait to get on their mailing lists. Williams Selyem wines have been served at the White House and continue to be sought after by top restaurants in California and New York.
These rare vintages have been generously donated by Mitch and Carole Firestone-Gillis.
